My mother just saw this breaking news from a NYTimes blog. Polaroid is abandoning what made it famous and will soon be stopping to make its instant film. I am heartbroken. I knew this was going to happen eventually, but I hoped I'd have a few more years. Now I need to start hoarding film. No more new film after 2009.
Sad for you, Claire. I think it's so cool the way you love your polaroids -- and we've all enjoyed your shots.
Polaroids -- the clunky, cool camera and the ka-chink-chink of the sound it makes when you snap a shot, the smell of the film and the magic of the photo developing -- are such great childhood memories for me.
Hoard away! Wonder how long you can store the film before it's unusable?

Thanks BG for your last two comments! People hoard polaroid film for a long time, and even if it's expired, it doesn't mean it won't take pictures, it just might be a little wonky and more "artistic."

Oh NO!! I still have a couple of Polaroid cameras and even though I don't use them as often as I used to, I always felt comfort in knowing I could. How sad.
BG is right- that smell... boy, that smell can take you right back.

This is what I get for not checking your blog often enough. I just wrote you an e-mail imploring you to write a Polaroid eulogy. As always, you are two steps ahead.
At least I know what to get you for your birthday this year...

That is sad news. They should make the film just for you. Maybe if the company saw your work...
